Enshin Itto Ryu BattoJutsu
Enshin Itto-ryu Battojutsu is a traditional samurai sword art of Japan. The founder and director is Machita Kenshinsai – Soke at the Enbukan Headquarters in Japan, and the chief instructor at USA Headquarters is Julio Toribio – Menkyo Kaiden Daijo Shihan.
Machita Kenshinsai Soke's mother was from a prestigious samurai clan in the Aizu area of the Tokugawa era. Machita Soke was born in 1932 and was taught martial arts from the age of 3 by his father and grandfather.
"Enshin" means the center of a circle, and "Battojutsu" means draw and cut sword art. The art emphasizes positioning oneself at the core of a circle by being aware of surroundings and energy flow. Speed is also crucial, focusing on drawing, cutting, and returning the sword to the scabbard rapidly; Machita Soke mastered this in under 2 seconds, a skill expected of higher-ranked students.
The art consists of three basic practical skills:
Kata: A set of solo pre-arranged movements using an Iaito (practice sword).
Kumitachi: Practical application against an attacker using a bokken (wooden sword).
Tameshi giri: Cutting a target with a Shinken (real sword) to perfect cutting skills and develop mental focus.
In Tameshigiri, practitioners cut rolls of Tatami (straw mats). Machita Soke holds the record of cutting 10 layers of Tatami mats. To practice gentle cutting and control, practitioners cut cucumbers or white radishes placed on someone's hand, mouth, or back of the neck without harming the holder.
The philosophy of the art includes relaxation, distance, timing, focus, concentration, confidence, presence, intention, accuracy, and intensive energy. Machita Soke believes that practicing martial arts differs from sports; true martial arts involve reaching a skill level that could instantly kill an opponent. In Enbukan philosophy, one must not fear but train harder than anyone else, subduing an attacker before being attacked.
Besides teaching martial arts, Machita Soke was a priest in Shingon-shu Buddhism and rans a temple by his residence and Dojo. His son has succeed him as the 3rd grandmaster.
Classes are taught on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
